Watercolor Month - Long Island - Laffey Real estate

Oil paintings may be impressive, but there are so many other artistic mediums out there that are just as beautiful. July is World Watercolor Month, so now is a great time to get better acquainted with this exquisite art form. According to our real estate agents, these five locations around Long Island are good places to begin.

  • Nassau County Museum of Art - 1 Museum Drive, Roslyn Harbor, NY 11576
Since its opening in 1969, the Nassau County Museum of Art has worked to showcase some of the finest works of American and European art. This includes many works from Barbara Prey, one of the most prominent American watercolor artists alive today. The museum also features rotating exhibits that often include at least a few pieces in watercolor.

If you want to learn more about using this medium, you can also take the museum's four-week watercolor course. The course runs every Wednesday in July from 1-3:30 pm at The Manes Center, the museum's on-site educational building near our Roslyn Habour homes for sale.

  • The Classical Art School of Long Island - 261 Glen Cove Avenue Front, Sea Cliff, NY 11579
The Classical Art School of Long Island has taught students near our Sea Cliff homes for sale how to master various artistic mediums for over 25 years. The school often displays the works of its students and teachers to demonstrate some of the techniques you can learn in their classes. Many of these works are in watercolors, making this a great place to observe how the medium looks when used by people of various skill levels.

What makes the school truly special, however, is its classes. Their watercolor painting class is offered every Friday evening from 3-5:30 pm and is open to everyone from beginners to experienced painters. If you've never picked up a brush before but always wanted to try, this might be the best place to start.

  • The Art Guild - 200 Port Washington Boulevard, Manhasset, NY 11030
The Art Guild is an artistic haven for the creative minds of Nassau County. Located near our Manhasset homes for sale, the organization operates from within the Elderfields Preserve in the oldest building in the region. The guild will be featuring their Members Showcase exhibition until July 16th, followed by their annual Creative Spirit exhibition starting July 20th. Both exhibits feature works from local artists and guild members in various mediums, including watercolors.

The guild also offers many watercolor classes to help enthusiasts hone their skills. There are classes for students of different skill levels, and some are even conducted online. Check out their course schedule and see if there are any sessions that interest you.

  • The Heckscher Museum of Art - 2 Prime Avenue, Huntington, NY 11743
The Heckscher Museum of Art was founded in 1920 by August Heckscher, a local philanthropist who donated 185 works of art from his collection to get the organization going. Now, the museum boasts over 2000 works of art, most of which are from past and present local artists from around Nassau County near our Huntington homes for sale. Their exhibits include many beautiful works from famed watercolor artists Wood Gaylor and Arthur G. Dove, among others.

The museum also hosts occasional events where participants can learn hands-on techniques for various artistic mediums, including watercolor painting. Why not see if there's one you can participate in during your visit?

  • The Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium - 180 Little Neck Road, Centerport, NY 11721
While its space-themed science exhibits often get much more attention, the Vanderbilt Museum, near our Centerport homes for sale, is also an excellent place to admire some stunning watercolors. Their collection includes massive troves of historical records filled with watercolor illustrations of the marine life that the explorer William K. Vanderbilt II found during his many travels in the early 20th century.

These illustrations are the inspiration for the museum's fan-favorite event, Watercolor in the Hall of Fishes. During this event, guests are invited to convene in the museum's Hall of Fishes and create their own watercolor replicas of the fish displayed on the walls. This event runs frequently, so keep an eye out for an announcement if you'd like to attend this July.

These impressive watercolor exhibits are far from the only artistic attractions on Long Island. Art lovers are sure to feel at home in this creative community. Contact us today to get expert help searching for your ideal home.
