Prep for Landscaping - Laffey Real Estate

Spring has sprung, and many homeowners will soon be updating their landscaping to make the most of it. Our real estate agents at Laffey Real Estate are all about curb appeal, and there are few things that can refresh a home's exterior like all-new landscaping.

Apart from that, landscaping gives you the opportunity for more fun around the home. Whether you are planting a tree or setting up a garden, there's nothing else quite like watching things grow. And getting ready for a new outdoor adventure isn't all that hard.

In just a few steps, you can have your home ready for fresh landscaping. Here's how you do it all the right way.

  1. Clean Up the Yard Area
First and foremost, get rid of any debris that found its way into your grass and planting beds. Clean up leaves, twigs, and anything else that's piled up during the winter. A rake is the "classic" way to go about it, but an air blower makes it much easier. This first step ensures that lawn waste won't clog up your lawnmower or inhibit the absorption of fertilizer into your lawn.

  2. Apply Fertilizer, Pre-Emergent, and Weed Killer
Early spring is the time for the magic combination of fertilizer and pre-emergent. Fertilizer feeds the grass, of course, and pre-emergent helps prevent weeds. In 6-8 weeks, you'll want to apply both products again along with broadleaf weed killer. This preparation ensures you won't end up fighting crabgrass or other unwanted guests all season long.

  3. Mow Early
Mowing is a big part of keeping your landscaping tidy. Sadly, though, many homeowners are not doing it the optimal way. Mowing once a week is convenient, but it can damage your grass by stunting the roots. For the first six weeks of spring, consider mowing every five days. This gives you a thicker, fuller lawn! Naturally, watch the weather to decide on the pace of your mowing.

  4. Select a Heavy, High-Quality Mulch
Once the lawn is in good shape, you can go on to the rest of the landscaping. Edge out flower beds, re-trim shrubs to prune back dead branches, and replace the mulch. Read mulch packaging carefully to understand what you're really getting. Hardwood bark mulches provide superior performance and look better than ground wood chips that have been dyed to look similar.

  5. Trim Your Trees
Unattended dead branches can turn into major hazards when wind and rain come your way. Still, it can be hard to notice which branches are dead without taking a close look. If you don't have the proper equipment, consider hiring a professional tree trimmer. Trimming isn't needed every season: Once every three years is enough for a standard "safety pruning."

For many people, a big yard with lush landscaping is part of the American dream. More than a few families dream of a yard with plenty of space for dogs to play too! Laffey Real Estate is here to help. Contact us to learn about local real estate opportunities.
