Winter Weather Activities Around Long Island - Laffey Real Estate

Just because it's winter is no reason to give up on the more strenuous walking regimens we developed in warmer weather. It's all a matter of having the proper gear: down outerwear; layers underneath, starting with thin, long-sleeved, wicking baselayer; warm, wicking socks; sturdy footwear; a face covering for windy days; and good gloves to keep hands warm. The next step is targeting the right destinations for your hikes. Are you bringing the kids? The dog? Do a little research, and be sure to check the weather, so you don't dress too warm or not warm enough for the temperature.

If you're looking for a home with outdoor adventuring destinations nearby, our real estate agents can help. While you're taking a break from house-hunting, how about checking out these places for some inspiration?

  1. Blydenburgh County Park - Veteran's Memorial Highway, Smithtown
This richly forested, 627-acre park at the headwaters of the Nissequogue River offers year-round delights for explorers. Hike around 100-acre Stump Pond on a hike led by the Greenbelt Trail Conference guides. Year-round horseback riding is offered. Dog owners can also bring their canine friends for a romp in the dog park. Enter at the northern entrance by following Route 347 to Brooksite Drive North; turn left on New Mill Road and follow to the park entrance at the end. The park is open year-round to Suffolk County residents and their guests, so if you're looking for a house among Smithtown homes for sale, put this gem at the top of your list of places to visit.

  2. Massapequa Preserve - Bethpage Bikeway, Massapequa Park
Massapequa Preserve is known for its picture-perfect, streamside biking, but it's also a good hiking venue, especially in winter when visitation is lower. The 432-acre park offers a real getaway from suburban sprawl in Nassau County. You can also traverse Long Island by going from Long Island Expressway in the north to the Massapequa Preserve, then bike to Cedar Beach and down to the ocean. Are you considering a home in Bellmore homes for sale in Nassau County? You're just 10 minutes away.

  3. Garvies Point Museum and Preserve - 50 Barry Drive, Glen Cove
There are lots of parks for those who settle one of the Glen Cove homes for sale in Nassau County. One you won't want to miss is 62-acre Garvies Point Museum and Preserve with its 5 miles of nature trails amid forests, meadows, and thickets. Even in winter, you can glimpse wildlife such as woodchucks, raccoons, and opossums. There are no guided tours in winter, but you can likely manage fine on your own. Sorry, no dogs.

  4. David Weld Sanctuary - Boney Lane, St. James
Buying a home among Nissaquogue homes for sale in Suffolk County offers a rural feel in a suburban setting. You'll also be near some great places for getting out of the house this winter. For starters, there's the David Weld Sanctuary on Long Island's north shore. Operated by the Nature Conservancy, it's a special place, and though not large, it's worth visiting in winter to see wildlife, including waterfowl and shorebirds. You can climb a 50-foot bluff that overlooks Long Island Sound and study terrain left strewn with boulders from the Ice Age. It's family-friendly, so bring the little ones along. When you're done there, drive the 18 miles or so east to 6000-acre Rocky Point Pine Barrens State Forest for more challenging terrain.
